JAMES HAGAN, ESQ., J.D., Ph.D.
James Hagan is a partner in The Hagan Law Firm, Inc. The law firm consists of two attorneys and has its office in Palo Alto. It serves approximately forty local, Sacramento, and Southern California business and commercial clients on a regular basis. It is engaged primarily in corporate representation and business litigation.
Mr. Hagan received his Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from the University of Oklahoma in 1957. At OU, Mr. Hagan was a member of the national championship and Orange bowl football team which set the current record of forty-seven consecutive victories. Mr. Hagan was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
Mr. Hagan spent the next five years in the United States Marine Corps as a jet fighter pilot of single-engine single-place supersonic carrier aircraft.
In 1962, Mr. Hagan left the Marine Corps for Stanford Law School. He graduated from Stanford in 1964 and has been engaged in the practice of law in Palo Alto since that time. Mr. Hagan also holds a Ph.D. in, and engages in the practice of, clinical psychology. From time to time he teaches law and ethics at the psychology department of Santa Clara University and at a local graduate school of professional psychology.
In 1973, Mr. Hagan established his own practice of law in Palo Alto. His practice has been devoted to the representation of a variety of corporate business clients in venture capital and high technology enterprises, both publicly and privately held. In addition to corporate maintenance and transactional matters, including mergers and acquisitions and securities offerings, Mr. Hagan has extensive experience with respect to intellectual property. He has done substantial work in patent litigation, patent licensing , and in the protection of trade secrets. Mr. Hagan has served as a director of public, private, and non-profit corporations and has been the president of high-technology manufacturing companies. In addition, in a case before the Superior Court of Santa Clara County, Mr. Hagan was appointed as a Special Master by Judge Franklin Elia to oversee the operation of a business which was the subject of the litigation. Mr. Hagan has been on several occasions entrusted with the care of substantial amounts of money as a trustee for the benefit of the creditors of the shareholders of a terminating business. In those cases , Mr. Hagan was responsible to take possession of and to liquidate assets, accumulate the proceeds, determine the parties entitled thereto, and pay out the funds. Because of his experience in both psychology and litigation, Mr. Hagan has been chosen at times to serve as a mediator or as a settlement attorney.
